I decided to make this account just to respond to this post. So I hardly did everything perfectly, but Macedon endured, we overcame our enemies, and we will not suffer any pretenders to Alexanders' legacy. I still wound up in a devastating war with Illyria that had me bankrupt, Paregon still decided they'd hate me, and Thracia was a trap and was still a thorn in my side for 50 turns. I will say this about my strategy though, my worries were only just beginning. I forgot to mention, I made trade agreements with both Rome and Syracuse while all this was going down.

I now also have the income to mount a full offensive against Tylis. So once I defeat Epirus, the other Greek states no longer hate me enough to break their treaties and that front is secure. The other thing that happens is that I gift all my spare income to Sparta, to guarantee they stay onside, because at this stage, Athens likes me more for my war against Epirus. Fortunately they decide to consolidate there instead of pushing out.

Tylis sieges my city in Thracia, eventually taking it (love the smart choices the AI is making in patch 14). Once I reached their last settlement I got lucky and it only had a fleet there apart from the garrison, so I siege it for the capture. This is the one with that bloody Elephant unit, had my javelins out of position on that fight and lost a lot more men then I should have. I then waited a couple of turns before moving on to Epirus' last city. I did this because Epirus is the only Hellenic faction currently more hated than me by my neighbors, war with them is as much about currying up favor as it is taking territory. Also I pick up any mercenaries for that fight and disband them straight away after the battle is done. While this happening, I'm spending the rest of my income on recruiting from Pella, I'm also moving my spy down to Larrisa.Īs soon as my General is back in the Army I consider it big enough to move out, the next turn I declare war against Epirus, and blitzkrieg Larrisa after poisoning the army there. I did this so my Hammer and anvil moves had as much shock cavalry as possible.

At Pella I replaced my general and then the next turn put him back into that Army, now with a Companion Cav unit instead of Royal Peltasts (You don't need to put your original general back in, but I like keeping my faction leader with the main army). I completely disregarded Thracia, the army there can hold a direct attack if micro is done correctly, and the region is hard to govern untill you have complete control of it.

I'll tell you how I handled my opening moves, and maybe that will give you a few ideas on how to get some traction. I can easily say its the most challenging R2 campaign I've played, but it wasn't impossible. I'm a bit of the way through a Macedon campaign myself on Patch 14. Think we missed one?
